Telecom service providers in Nigeria recently launched a DND (Do not Disturb) service, which stops all unsolicited SMS from getting to you. However, the DND codes can only stop unwanted SMS when you activate it on your mobile line. Furthermore, it is the duty of your network service provider to provide the specific “Do Not Disturb” code for your network. However, here are the Do not Disturb DND codes for MTN, GLO, Airtel, 9Mobile customers to stop unwanted SMS and how to apply it. These networks include MTN, GLO, 9Mobile, Airtel. Therefore, you can use these “Do Not Disturb” codes for MTN, GLO, 9Mobile and Airtel networks respectively. This service was introduced by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to preserve and protect the rights of Nigerians to privacy and security using mobile phones.
MTN Do-Not-Disturb (DND) Service Codes and How to Apply it
For MTN customers, the Do Not Disturb service enables customers to choose to stop all unwanted SMS, allow some others or block all SMS. These text messages come from 3rd party platforms or promotionals. However, some may be very annoying and even malicious. The only way to stay safe as an MTN user is to apply the DND service code.
To activate the Do-Not-Disturb (DND) on MTN phone line, here are three available options;
- Total Blocking
- Partial Blocking
To activate Total Blocking on MTN Do-Not-Disturb, send SMS “STOP” to the number 2442. The Total Blocking mode ensures that MTN customers opt out completely from receiving any promotional text messages or via IVR notifications.
For partial Blocking on DND for MTN, send “HELP” in text message to number 2442. The following options will appear;

- STOP: To stop all SMS
- ALLOW: To receive all SMS
- 1: To receive Banking / Insurance/ Financial Products SMS
- 2: To receive Real Estate SMS
- 3: To receive Education SMS
- 4: Health SMS
- 5: To receive Consumer goods & Automobiles SMS,
- 6: Communication/Broadcasting/Entertainment/IT,
- 7: To receive Tourism & Leisure SMS
- 8: To receive Sport SMS
- 9: To receive Religion SMS
- STATUS: To check your DND status
Note the action required for any category you wish to receive and reply the SMS accordingly. Any category the MTN customer replies is what he or she shall start receiving SMS from.
In addition, MTN sends a confirmatory text message notifying you of the success of your Blocking or Allowing for the Do Not Disturb service.
Generally, MTN customers can perform the following functions for Do-Not-Disturb (DND) using SMS thus;
- Activate full or partial blocking
- Check DND status
- Modify selected categories to block or unblock
- Opt out of the MTN DND service
To unblock all text messages from the DNB service, kindly send “ALLOW” in SMS to the number 2442. Finally, all MTN Do Not Disturb services are free and efficient to stop unwanted SMS however the customer wants it.
Do-Not-Disturb (DND) for GLO, Airtel, 9Mobile to Stop Unwanted SMS
Surprisingly, you can also activate DND on GLO,9Mobile and Airtel lines by following the same procedure as I described for MTN above. The 2442 is not exclusive to MTN alone, but to all networks in Nigeria. Furthermore, all options available for MTN customers are also exactly same and available for all other networks.
