As Nigeria begins the TV broadcast analog to digital switchover this 2017, a leading telecommunication technology giant MTN has joined in the provision of free digital TV services for the over 170 million Nigerians. With its launch recently in Jos the Plateau State Capital, the MTN’s free TV platform known as the Over-the-top service has added a boost to the Nigeria Government’s policy of ensuring a complete TV broadcast switch over from analog to digital by June 2017.
With this development, Nigerians are set to start enjoying over 30 crystal clear and super digital TV channels with added features like the video-on-demand service on MTN. The broadcast technology which involves a set-top box software from Inview Technologies allows a subscriber to choose any program or TV channel of choice to view at anytime.
In my previous post, I explained how the Free Digital TV technology works in terms of the TV broadcast signal transmission. With the value added service of the video-on-demand, it means that the set-top signal boxes would posses some more interactive features in almost real time. Other digital TV technologies which also displays the video-on-demand and other interactive services include DStv, MultiTV, GOtv, StarTimes etc.
According to MTN, the new free digital TV will soon be available in all states of the Nigerian federation. Already over 200,000 Nigerians have started enjoying the digital free TV service.
